Firefly Welding Boosts Leadership Capabilities with Supervisor Training

At Firefly Welding, we understand that strong leadership and a well-trained workforce are essential to delivering projects safely, efficiently, and to the highest standard. That is why we have recently invested in an important round of training for our frontline supervisors, equipping them with industry-recognised certifications in Site Management Safety Training Scheme (SMSTS) and First Aid at Work.

This initiative forms part of our ongoing commitment to professional development and health and safety excellence. By providing our team leaders with the right tools, training, and confidence to lead on-site operations, we are reinforcing the exacting standards that Firefly is known for — not just in terms of artisanry, but in culture and care.

SMSTS : Developing frontline supervisors.

Firefly supervisors play a critical role on every project. Whether they are overseeing fabrication work in our dedicated facility or managing teams during mechanical installations on complex sites, they are the ones ensuring that plans are followed, risks are managed, and work is completed safely and effectively.

The SMSTS training, delivered over several intensive days, provides a comprehensive understanding of site safety, health, and environmental management. Covering everything from current legislation and risk assessments to method statements, incident reporting, and CDM (Construction Design and Management) regulations, this training ensures our supervisors are fully equipped to manage people, process, and risk on-site.

“The SMSTS course really helped me see safety from a wider perspective,” said Will, one of the recent course attendees. “It’s all about staying proactive—spotting potential risks early and making sure everything is set up right from the start to keep things running smoothly and safely.

First Aid at Work: Prepared for the unexpected.

In addition to SMSTS, our supervisors also completed First Aid at Work training — a vital qualification in high-risk environments like industrial fabrication, welding, and mechanical assembly. The course, delivered by accredited trainers at St John’s Ambulance, covered emergency response procedures including CPR, wound treatment, burns, fractures, and the correct use of defibrillators.

Having qualified first aiders on every job site ensures that our teams are not only safer but supported by leaders who can react swiftly and calmly in any situation. It adds another layer of protection and professionalism to the services we offer.

Safety, Skills, and Support – The Firefly Standard

This round of training is part of a wider programme at Firefly to invest in the personal and professional growth of our staff at every level. Whether it is supervisors gaining new qualifications or young welders learning the trade, we are committed to fostering a workplace where competence, confidence, and care go hand in hand.

“We don’t just train for the sake of ticking boxes,” said Michael Burgess, Operations Director at Firefly Welding  “We train because our people deserve to grow – and because our clients rely on us to get things done safely, reliably, and with complete professionalism.”

With these new certifications, our supervisors are even better prepared to manage complex projects, maintain safe working environments, and uphold the reputation for excellence that Firefly Welding is proud of.
