A Graduate’s First Major Test

Will joined Firefly following his studies in Accounting and Finance and International Business and graduate experience in data analysis and workflow management. While his academic background wasn’t in mechanical engineering, his desire for strategic management saw him tasked with a key role in Project Arctic. From an office-based position, he oversaw crucial aspects of the project, a chance to showcase adaptability and potential.

As domestic mechanical subcontractor for Logistics, Firefly managed pipework installation across a range of materials, including:

  • Stainless Steel Pipework: 6” to 12” diameters.
  • Copper Pipework: 15mm to 22mm diameters.
  • PVC Pipework: 2” to 4” diameters.

“Our crew was in charge of piping installation to the highest pharmaceutical standards, and we did it with a focus on quality and no revisits, making sure everything was right first time” Will explained. “The pharmaceutical environment needed every detail to be exact—hygiene, safety, and the install—and I’m lucky to have been part of a team that delivered consistently throughout the project.”

Delivering Excellence

As the domestic mechanical subcontractor for the Logistics Building, Firefly applied its expertise, ensuring smooth coordination of piping installation, and commissioning processes. Advanced pipefitting and welding techniques were used to address material requirements.

One aspect of Will’s role was his use of Navisworks, a 3D modelling and coordination tool. He produced detailed visualisations and drawings that were instrumental in guiding the on-site team.

“Navisworks was really useful in helping me stay organised,” Will explained. “It allowed me to plan each stage of the installation and ensure everything was installed as planned by Mercury and Jacobs. By sharing the information with the crew, we were able to work efficiently and prevent snags.”

In addition to technical coordination, Will was responsible for managing workflows, communicating with crews, and ensuring collaboration with the main contractor and other trades. “I quickly learned the importance of clear, consistent communication in a high-pressure environment like this,” he noted.

Navigating Challenges

One of the most demanding aspects of the project was coordinating with other trades to ensure smooth integration on-site. Will managed schedules, monitored progress, and provided solutions to challenges as they arose.

“Making last-minute adjustments to meet unexpected site conditions required quick thinking and flexibility. These moments helped me learn how to keep calm under pressure by managing expectations and staying focused on the project goals.”

Upholding Firefly Standards

Project Arctic shows Firefly’s dedication to delivering mechanical works of the highest standard. The successful commissioning phase showcased our commitment to precision, hygiene, and excellence, reinforcing our reputation as a trusted leader in the construction industry.

“We stayed focused on quality throughout the project,” Will said. “That led to us being trusted with more responsibility, which comes down to the attitude and ability of the crew and the guidance from Craig, Kieran, and Mick”.
